Workshop on the
Trichoptera of Western North America
Larval, Pupal and Adult Taxonomy, plus Distribution and Biology
February 18-19, 2012
Briggs Hall Room 122, University of California-Davis
A few seats may still be available for this workshop. If you are interested in attending, please contact Wendy Willis (wendy@aquabio.org) to register.
Southwest Association of Freshwater Invertebrate Taxonomists (SAFIT) is sponsoring a 2-day workshop that will provide comprehensive instruction in the taxonomy of larvae, pupae and adults of the insect order Trichoptera (caddisflies) of western North America. The course instructors are:
Bob Wisseman, Aquatic Biology Associates, Inc., Corvallis OR, has studied the biology and distribution of western North American caddisflies for over 30 years.
Dave Ruiter, EPA retired, Centennial, CO, has focused on caddis for nearly 40 years with the primary emphasis on western North American taxa.
Joe Giersch, USGS, West Glacier, MT, focuses on the taxonomy and morphology of larval and adult Rhyacophila, and insects in alpine streams.
Attendees will receive a complete introduction to the biology, taxonomy, and biogeography of the Trichoptera of western North America as well as training in the proper preparation of specimens for study. Attendees will also receive identification manuals and supporting materials prepared by the instructors for this workshop.
This is also an opportunity for guest lecturers to present updates, new keys, figures and photos for groups other than caddisflies. Please contact Robert Wisseman if you are interested is making a short presentation or have material to hand out (bobwisseman@mac.com). Also feel free to bring problematic specimens from any freshwater invertebrate group. There will be many specialists attending to help on identification.
The workshop will be held on the UC Davis campus. Special thanks to Steve Heydon and the Bohart Museum of Entomology for hosting this SAFIT event.

Special information for students:
SAFIT has a policy of supporting students in the field of freshwater invertebrate taxonomy. Therefore, SAFIT has reserved up to five positions for currently enrolled students whose research focuses on Trichoptera or related invertebrates. Registration fees (normally $275 for members and $375 for non-members) for these students will be entirely waived, in exchange for assistance with running the workshop (such as setting up before or cleaning up after).
If you are interested in attending this workshop at no cost, please submit a short statement (no more than 500 words) to the SAFIT Secretary (Wendy Willis: wendy@aquabio.org). Be sure to include the following:
- Indicate that you are a full time student. Include the name of your school, expected year of completion, and your major advisor.
- Explain how this workshop relates to your current research interests, or to your future career goals. Although a formal research prospectus isn’t necessary, please provide details about research questions and hypotheses you intend to explore.
Statements are due by January 31, 2012, and will be reviewed by a committee of SAFIT members. Awards will be notified by February 3, 2012.

Bugfest
The purpose of Bugfest is for folks to bring in their problem specimens or difficult taxa for others to help with the identification. This will enable us to identify things together and make certain that we are all seeing the same characters. This not only will foster collaboration but will help us strengthen each other and SAFIT as a group. If you are interested in this opportunity to hob knob with your fellow wizards, please contact Joe Slusark (jslusark@csuchico.edu, 530.898.4792) or Christopher Rogers (crogers@ecoanalysts.com, 530.756.4481). If we get enough folks interested, we will select a date and a venue. Ideally we will hold the bugfest at an entomological museum where there will be plenty of material for examination and comparison, as well as libraries.
