California Department of Fish and Game’s Aquatic Bioassessment Laboratory (ABL)

The mission of the ABL (part of DFG's Water Pollution Control Laboratory)  is to support  the use of biology in California's water quality management and assessment programs.

Northwest Bioassessment Workgroup (NBAW)

The purpose of NBAW is to promote a better understanding of the biotic communities in freshwater ecosystems of the northwest. The NBAW encourages and facilitates the use of benthic macroinvertebrates and fish assemblages and other biota in the assessment of the condition of freshwater aquatic resources and other environmental and natural resource  management decision-making.

North American Benthological Society (NABS)

An international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote better understanding of the biotic communities of lake and stream bottoms and their role in aquatic ecosystems, by providing media and disseminating new investigation results, new interpretations, and other benthological information to aquatic biologists and to the scientific community at large.

Southern California Association of Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists (SCAMIT)

SCAMIT was formed in 1982 with the goal of promoting the study of marine invertebrate taxonomy in southern California. SCAMIT is the sister organization to SAFIT.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/abl/Lab/california_referencecollection.asp

The digital reference collection is a collection of web pages designed to offer digital images of aquatic invertebrates found in California (and throughout the Southwest).  The pages are not meant to be used as a key, but are intended for use verifying specimens.  Each page has a series of  images and a table of information designed to highlight key characteristics of the taxon depicted.  The pages are organized at three levels of taxonomy.  Family Level pages designed to be used by Citizen Monitoring groups and pages for SAFIT Level 1 and Level 2 taxonomy.
